“You Have the Right to Remain… Confident: What to Do If You’re Stopped by the Police”

Let’s be honest getting stopped by the police while Black is a different experience. Whether it’s a traffic stop, walking home, or just minding your business, it’s crucial to know your rights and how to protect yourself in the moment.
This post isn’t to scare you. It’s to prepare you.
🚨 If You’re Pulled Over in a Car:
You must:
Pull over safely and promptly
Show your driver’s license, registration, and proof of insurance if asked
You don’t have to:
Answer questions like “Where are you going?” or “Why are you out here?”
Consent to a search (say: “I do not consent to a search”)
Stay calm. Keep your hands visible. Ask if you’re free to go.
🚶🏾♀️ If You’re Stopped on the Street:
You can ask: “Am I being detained or am I free to go?”
If they say you’re not free to leave, you are being detained — don’t run, but don’t talk without a lawyer.
If you're free to go, calmly walk away.
🎥 Can You Record the Police?
Yes in all 50 states. As long as you’re not interfering with their work, you have the right to record.
That includes:
Cell phone video
Audio recording
Going live on Instagram or Facebook
They cannot legally make you delete footage or take your phone without a warrant.

You have the right to remain silent. Use it.
You have the right to a lawyer. Ask for one — then stop talking.
You have the right to protect yourself legally. Knowing your rights could save your life.
