What We Got Wrong About Essential Workers & Why It Still Matters

During COVID, we called people essential.

We clapped for them.

We thanked them.

We depended on them.

But now?

Most of those same people are still dealing with the stress, the burnout, and the long-term effects… and a lot of the support they had is gone.

So the real question is: What actually changedand what didn’t?

Lately, I’ve been talking to essential workers right here in our community: nurses, teachers, truck drivers, and more.

Not just surface-level conversations either… real ones.

I’ve been asking:

  • What did your job look like before COVID?

  • What changed during it?

  • And what does it look like now?

And one thing keeps coming up over and over again:

A lot of the decisions that affected their lives were tied to policies most people don’t even know exist.

When people hear the word policy, it can feel confusing or out of reach.

But it’s really not.

Policy is just decisions made by people in power that affect your everyday life.

That can look like:

  • Whether workers get hazard pay

  • Whether paid leave is available

  • How schools handle grading and attendance

  • What protections workers have on the job

So when something changes in your daily life…that didn’t just happen somebody made a decision.

So, What Happened After COVID?

Here’s the part people don’t talk about enough:

Some of the support systems that were put in place during COVID:

  • Expired

  • Were cut

  • Or were never meant to last

Which means many essential workers went from being called heroes…right back to being overlooked.

And if we don’t understand what policies were in place, we don’t even realize what we lost.

This Isn’t New, It’s Been Happening

What we’re seeing now didn’t start with COVID.

In North Carolina, there’s a long-running court case called Leandro v. State of North Carolina.

At its core, the case says that every child in this state has a constitutional right to a sound basic education not just access to a classroom, but the resources, support, and opportunities needed to actually succeed.

But here’s the reality:

Even with that ruling, many schools especially in communities like ours are still under-resourced.

So when COVID hit:

  • Students fell behind

  • Teachers were overwhelmed

  • Schools had to adjust quickly

It didn’t create new problems. It exposed problems that were already there.

Problems that communities have been dealing with for years.

Why This Matters Now

This isn’t just about COVID.

This is about:

  • How decisions are made

  • Who those decisions impact

  • And why everyday people should actually understand what’s going on

Because if you don’t understand it, you can’t question it.

You can’t challenge it.

And you definitely can’t change it.

What I’m Doing About It

I’m creating:

✔️ Simple breakdowns of policies

✔️ Community conversations

✔️ Worksheets people can actually use

✔️ Space for people to share their real experiences

Because information shouldn’t feel confusing or out of reach.

And This Is Just The Beginning…

I’m going to keep sharing what I learn the stories, the policies, and the real-life impact.

Because this isn’t just something to read about.

It’s something we all live through every day.

If you’re an essential worker or know someone who is, I’d love to hear your story.

And if you’ve ever felt like decisions are being made without people really understanding how they affect us…

Stay connected. There’s more coming.
